Cheap Books

I love to read, but buying books can get expensive.  Yes, I know you can borrow books from the library for free, but the books I want to read are rarely in when I want them.  I also don't like having to worry about returning books on time, so I don't borrow from the library very often. That being said, I still like being able to read books without breaking the bank, so here are a few thrifty ways I've found to be able to enjoy books.
My favorite one is buying books at the Friends of the Library Book Sales.  These are usually held a few times a year and are a great resource for cheap books.  I was able get these 10 books for $10!
I alsos enjoy swapping books with friends and family.  This way, you even have someone to discuss the book with! Another thrifty alternative is to buy books at yard sales.
Happy Reading!

Tips for Saving Money at the Grocery Store

1. Check your inventory at home.  See what you already have, what you're low on, or out of.
2. Research your grocery store's weekly ad for the best buys.
3. Match up your coupons with the sale prices.
4. Create a meal plan for the week using some of the items you already have.  Then fill in the menu with items on sale at the grocery store.
5. Make a list and stick to it!
6. Shop alone, if you can.  You need to concentrate on matching up the coupons with the right items.  You'll also avoid requests from others for things that aren't on the list.
7.  Never shop hungry!  You're more likely to come home with things you don't necessarily need.
8. Have your coupons ready before you get to the check out line.
9. Watch to see that your items scan for the correct price and that all your coupons scan.
10. Double check your receipt!  There have been several times I've had items ring up incorrectly, been charged double, or had coupons not go through.  Don't be afraid to go to the customer service desk to make corrections.
Good luck, I hope these tips help you save money and have a pleasant coupon shopping experience!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Fall is here!  I love the sights and smells of Fall.  The colder weather gets me in the mood to bake.  The aroma of cinnamon and cloves baking makes the house seem so warm and cozy. Here's the recipe for my favorite oatmeal raisin cookies to help you welcome Fall into your home.
Giant Oatmeal & Raisin Cookie.jpg

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup packed light brown sugar

½ cup white sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

¾ cup flour

¾ cup whole-wheat flour - If you don't have whole wheat flour, you can use all-purpose instead.

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 ¼ teaspoons cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground cloves

1 cup raisins (soak in hot water for 10 minutes to plump, then drain)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Cream the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar together.  Mix in the eggs and vanilla.  Combine the two types of flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cloves in a separate bowl.  Then pour the flour mixture into the sugar mixture and mix well.   Stir in the oats and plumped raisins.  Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls on to a cookie sheet and bake for about 11 minutes.  Remove cookies from the oven and let them cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.  Enjoy!

Makes about 3 dozen cookies
